Infection Control Protocol

The following PPE and infection control protocol must be followed prior to performing dental treatement in dental operatory

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Disposable gowns must be worn during disinfection, set-up procedures, patient treatment, clean-up procedures, and sterilization

  • Protective eyewear must be worn at all times when performing procedures in the dental operatory or when in sterilization area

  • Examination gloves must be worn when performing all aspects of dental treament and preparation for patient treatment

  • Utility gloves must be worn when cleaning dental operatory and when handling dirty instruments in sterilization area

Preparing the Dental Operatory

  • While doning PPE student will flush water lines for 3 minutes

  • Wipe all surfaces (dental chair, light, hoses, switches, bracket table, assistant/doctor stools) with gauze saturated with disinfectant cleaner

  • Let surfaces remain wet for 10 minutes

  • Repeat following procedure

Setting up Dental Operatory

Place protective barriers on the following surfaces utilizing exam gloves:

  • all hoses 1_38073_FS.jpg

  • dental light switches

  • dental chair switches

  • air/water syringe

  • tray table

  • dental stools

  • writing utencils

Patient Treatment

  • Always wear PPE

  • Do not touch chart during treatment

  • Use disposable prophy cup,brush,air/water syringe, HVE, saliva ejector and dispose of after use

  • At completion of treatment, remove patient napkin and eyewear, and dismiss patient


Dental Operatory Clean-up

  • Always wear PPE when breaking down operatory. Remove exam gloves, wash hands for 30 secs and replace with clean examination gloves followed by utility gloves

  • Remove handpiece

  • Remove all plastic barriers and wipe surfaces with gauze saturated in surface disinfectant, let sit for 10 minutes

  • Procede to Sterilization

Sterilization

  • Always wear PPE

  • Proceed to dirty side sterilization area with tray and items that require processing

  • Place disposables in trash, instruments in Ultrasonic (handpieces are not placed in ultrasonic, wipe with 2x2 gauze to remove debris) then lubircate and place in sterilzation pouch

  • Remove instruments from ultrasonic and place in sterilization pouches

  • Place pouches into sterilizer with transter forceps

  • Close door and begin cycle

  • Remove PPE

  • Wash hands


Infection Control and Sterilization protocol MUST be followed for every patient.
